Larry Vernon Davis Sr., 67, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully at home after a battle with heart disease on July 27, 2010, surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 1, 1943, in Wood County, the son of the late Virginia Elizabeth and Gerald Hugh Davis.

Larry served in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965, including one year of foreign service. After leaving the Marines in 1965 as a Corporal E-4, he served two years in active reserves. He believed in the motto "Once a Marine, always a Marine" and was very proud of his time served.

Larry was employed at the American Viscose, Corning Glass, and Schott Scientific where he was a member of the fire brigade and retired in 2000 with 26 years of service. He was an active member of Landmark Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.

As a youth, Larry was a DJ for local dances at the YMCA and was co-host of Platter Party, WTAP's local live version of American Bandstand, where kids would stand in line for hours just to see him dance. The love of music carried on throughout Larry's life as he would often sing to his children and grandchildren.

Larry not only enjoyed music, he enjoyed the company of his family and friends. He attended a "coffee club" at the home of his best friends, Dave and Nancy Wilcox nearly every morning and spent time chatting with his wonderful neighbors and friends, Bob Spangler and Arley Keffer.

Along with his wife of 44 years, Cora (Stephens), Larry is survived by three children, his daughters, Tamara Moore (Tom) and Pamela Davis, and his son, Larry Davis Jr. (Allison); five grandchildren, Skylar Moore (Tamara), Zachary Staats and Danielle Hall (Pamela), and twins, Asher and Isaac Davis (Larry Jr.), with one grandson due in December (Larry Jr.); two brothers, Richard Davis (Barbara) and Randy Davis (Judy); two sisters, Shirley Sheppard (Keith) and Penny Jordan (Roger); and many nieces and nephews.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald Davis and Jeff Davis.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Landmark Baptist Church with Pastor Judeh officiating and military rites by the American Legion Post 15. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service.

The family asks that you honor Larry's memory by doing what he loved best - spending time with your family and friends.
